Frozen Shoulder Treatments at Bloor Jane Physiotherapy

Adhesive capsulitis, commonly known as frozen shoulder, is a very painful condition. Not only is it painful but it gets progressively more stiff. The shoulder or glenohumeral joint is a capsule of connective tissue and this capsule can become inflamed after an injury or consistent overuse. Inflammation occurs in the soft tissues of the joint capsule and its synovial fluid. This leads to fibrosis and adhesions of the joint capsule and its synovial lining. X-ray findings of the bony structures of the shoulder remain negative.

Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Treatment at Bloor Jane Physiotherapy

The most common type of shoulder pain treated with physiotherapy is rotator cuff tendonitis. The shoulder complex is a combination of muscles and bony structures called the rotator cuff. The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint, but in fact is more like a teacup on a saucer, with a very shallow oval socket allowing for greater mobility in arm movement. There are many muscles that move the shoulder in each direction and a diagnosis of tendonitis means the tendon of one or more of these muscles is injured and inflamed.

Understanding the Complexities of Your Knee

The Physiotherapists at Bloor Jane Physiotherapy understand the complex anatomy of the knee and know how to treat your knee pain. There is no single treatment that reduces knee pain as each person is different. It depends on the nature of the injury, what tissues were injured, the pre-existing conditions you have and your level of activity. Most injuries cause the knee to swell immediately due to inflammation of the joint capsule. A fall directly on the knee can fracture the kneecap or it can tear the quadriceps tendon.

A twisting injury can result in a ligament strain; the cruciate ligaments (ACL) and the collateral ligaments are often injured in a football tackle. Runner’s knee or chondromalacia can develop when there is an imbalance in the quadriceps muscles resulting in improper patellar tracking. You might develop osteoarthritis, a deterioration of the cartilage inside the knee joint. There can be many conditions with different types of knee pain.

Tension Headaches: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Tension headaches are the most common of the four main types of headaches. The others are sinus headaches, cluster headaches and migraines. Tension headaches are often described as a mild to moderate feeling of a tight band wrapped around the entire head, in the forehead, temples, and the back. They are generally difficult to distinguish from each other, but their location offers a key. Sinus headaches are only in the forehead, clusters in one eye and migraines located on one side of the head.

It’s possible to have any combination of these different types at one time. For example, migraines may occur together with tension headaches and it’s possible to have other symptoms also, like fatigue and sleep disturbances. This often complicates a clear medical diagnosis, a diagnosis that cannot rely on x-rays or ultrasounds.

Bloor Jane Physiotherapy Sells Custom Orthopaedic Braces

Have you been told to wear an orthopaedic brace? Orthopaedic braces are worn over a painful joint to help support and stabilize it. Custom orthopaedic braces come in many different shapes and sizes and they are ordered specifically to each individual’s measurements and for each individual’s needs. They can be light-weight and breathable or more rigid with hinges or straps and they all offer perfectly positioned padding to maximize support and minimize pain. Unlike casts that immobilize the area, an orthopaedic brace allows pain-free mobility and limits all harmful movements.

Acupuncture Treatments at Bloor Jane Physiotherapy

What Is Acupuncture and How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which practitioners stimulate specific points of the body by inserting very fine needles through the skin. Acupuncture needles stimulate the body to produce its own pain-relieving endorphins. They, in turn, block the neural pathways from sending pain sensation. Endorphins are one of the body’s own opioid chemicals that stimulate natural healing abilities and promote physical well-being.

A Helpful Message From Bloor Jane Physiotherapy Ergonomic Guidelines for Setting up a Home Office

All the team at Bloor Jane Physiotherapy have been working from home since we closed. I set up my laptop on the kitchen table. Others may be working at a dining table or on a couch at a coffee table, but most likely all have a poor ergonomic setup. My space is well lit, and I have room to spread out, but I don’t have a good supportive chair. My chair seems comfortable with armrests, but it doesn’t have lumbar support for my back. I need to take frequent breaks to walk around, but I still have some low backache at night and some morning stiffness.
